On June 12, 2025, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute (MLI) and the Center for North American Prosperity and Security (CNAPS) hosted a reception for business leaders and policymakers in downtown Toronto. The event featured a panel discussion led by Brian Lee Crowley and including panelists Jamie Tronnes, Executive Director of CNAPS in Washington, and Ed Fast, Former Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development.
“We (Canada) have a lot of bargaining chips but they are not within CUSMA (USMCA)… by broadening out the discussion of our relationship — our security relationship, our economic relationship, our military relationship — I believe we’ll have a better outcome for Canada,” noted Ed Fast.
“It is incumbent on Canada to think about our relationship with the United States, to manage it intelligently, to make it possible for America to feel that they can engage with Canada and come out of it a winner when they’re not willing to spend a lot of time thinking about the relationship,” explained Brian Crowley.
MLI and CNAPS are grateful to our kind hosts, members of the board in attendance, and our thoughtful guests for a fantastic evening!
